About the toll Why is a toll charged? The toll helps cover part of construction cost of the new Ring Road through Hornafjörður, as well as part of all operating costs of the infrastructure. Icelandic law authorises the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration to collect tolls for this purpose. How will the toll revenue be used? The revenue will be used to cover a part of construction costs and contribute towards the operation and maintenance of the new road and bridge. Who is required to pay the toll? Generally all vehicles travelling through the tolled section of the road are subject to the toll, including passenger cars, coaches and lorries. Certain emergency and public-service vehicles are exempt. When is a toll charged? A toll is charged when a vehicle passes through the toll gantry by the bridge. Monitoring equipment reads the vehicle’s number plate and records the journey. The equipment is located east of the Djúpá junction. Do I need to stop to pay? No. The tolling system is fully electronic, with no toll booths or payment stations on the road. Cameras read the number plates of vehicles as they pass. What happens if I turn around at the roundabout? No toll is charged if the vehicle does not pass through the toll gantry itself. Prices and payment How much does a single journey cost? A single journey costs ISK 1,500 for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, ISK 2,100 for vehicles from 3.5 to 7.5 tonnes, and ISK 4,500 for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes. Further information about discounts and monthly maximum charges is available in the price list on spolur.is. Do I need to register my vehicle? No. Vehicles are registered automatically by the camera and recognition equipment when they pass through the toll gantry. How do I pay for journeys? A monthly payment request will normally appear in Icelandic online banking. Individual journeys can also be paid for through the payment page on spolur.is. Are discounts available? Yes. The price per journey is automatically reduced as more journeys are made each month, in accordance with the current Spölur price list. The price list also specifies the maximum monthly charge for each vehicle weight category. When is the toll collected? The toll is charged through Icelandic online banking at the end of each month. The payment request will show the due date and final payment date. A record of journeys and payments is available under My Pages on spolur.is. Where can I find receipts and invoices? Receipts and invoices are stored under My Pages on spolur.is, where they can be downloaded as PDF files. What happens if I forget to pay? If a journey is not paid for within the specified period, additional charges may apply and a payment request may be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle. Can I dispute a toll charge? Yes. If you believe that a toll has been charged incorrectly, you can submit a comment or dispute to spolur@spolur.is . Please provide the vehicle registration number, the date of the journey and the invoice number, where applicable. Emergency vehicles and special circumstances Are emergency vehicles required to pay? Emergency vehicles are exempt from the toll. This also applies to vehicles operated by search and rescue teams and the police, as well as other vehicles covered by defined public-service exemptions. Are there special rules for coaches and lorries? The toll is determined by the vehicle’s weight category, as set out in the price list. No other special payment rules apply to coaches or lorries. Do electric or other environmentally friendly vehicles pay a lower toll? No. There is no separate reduced toll for electric vehicles or other environmentally friendly vehicles. How are foreign-registered vehicles and rental cars handled? Foreign-registered vehicles are subject to the toll in the same way as other vehicles. For rental cars, the rental company is expected to collect the toll from its customers in accordance with its own terms and conditions. What rules apply to foreign-registered vehicles? Drivers of foreign-registered vehicles can pay the toll at spolur.is. Visitors who bring their own vehicles to Iceland will be required to pay a fixed road-use fee covering the duration of their stay in the country. Data collection and privacy What information is recorded when a vehicle passes through the toll gantry? The system records the information necessary to confirm the journey and collect the toll, including the vehicle’s number plate and the time and location of the journey. Are information and images retained? All receipts are archived in the user‘s „my pages" on the Spölur website and can be downloaded there in PDF format. How is privacy protected? Personal data is processed in accordance with applicable data protection legislation. Access to the data is restricted, and the information is used only for the purpose for which it was collected. The new Ring Road through Hornafjörður What are the main benefits of the new road section? The new road shortens the Ring Road by 12 km and reduces the distance to Höfn by even more. Three single-lane bridges have been removed from the Ring Road, leaving 26 such bridges remaining. The project included the construction of 19 km of highway, 9 km of side roads and four new two-lane bridges. The former road will continue to serve local traffic. What level of service will be provided on the former Ring Road, now Hornafjarðarvegur (Road 987)? Winter maintenance will be provided five days a week on Hornafjarðarvegur (Road 987) and Djúpárvegur (Road 988), every day except Tuesdays and Saturdays.
